Project Value: $66M
Located in the Union Square area of Somerville, MA, the project consisted of major underground utility upgrades to improve drainage and reduce flooding in a bustling city neighborhood. The scope included installation of a half-mile-long, 14-ft wide x 6-ft tall storm water box culvert drainage system, cleaning and CIPP lining of existing sewers ranging in size from 12-inch diameter to 84-inch diameter, installation of new 24-inch and 42-inch diameter PVC sewers, 5000 feet of new water mains, and a new street lighting system. Above the ground, elevated cycle tracks and green pavement markings were added for biker safety. New green infrastructure including porous pavement, soil cells, storm water planters, and bioretention basins were installed to collect and reuse storm water runoff in planting areas. Additionally, the project improved three existing pier foundations of McGrath Highway by installing micropiles down to bedrock and encompassing the existing shallow footings in the new pile caps.
