Estimated Project Value: $248M
Barletta was the Managing Partner of this 4-way Joint Venture with O&G Industries, D.W. White, and Aetna Bridge. AECOM was hired to be the Lead Designer for the Design-Build Project. The Reconstruction of the Route 6/10 Interchange was the largest Design Build Project undertaken by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation at the time and one of the largest projects ever undertaken in the State. The project entailed reconstruction of the entire interchange within the existing highway right of way, while replacing/removing the seven structurally deficient bridges within the project area. The DB process allowed Barletta’s Team to develop Alternate Technical Concepts and design enhancements that provided cost and schedule savings to the Project.
Some of the more notable ones included:
- Improved utility phasing of 2 bridges through bridge phasing development that eliminated the need to temporarily relocate electric, water and gas utilities.
- Elimination of temporary vehicle bridges by shifting the mainline roadway alignment.
- Eliminated all piers within the Amtrak ROW.
- Achieved Amtrak’s minimum clearance on all bridges to eliminate the need to obtain design exceptions.
- Reduced the number of piers at 7 of the 11 bridges, reduced structure length at 6 of the 11 bridges and reduced the total bridge bearings by 35%, from 524 to 344.
- A flyover ramp that provided direct connection, removing the “missing move” from Route 10 NB to Route 6 WB.
