MBTA Park Street Vertical Transportation

Project Details

Project Value: $4M

As part of the MBTA’s system-wide Accessibility Improvement initiative, Park Street Vertical Transportation Improvements Project (A90CN08) consists of the replacement of an existing elevator, elevator headhouse, and elevator hoistway, which extends from the Green Line platform, up to street level, at the corner of Tremont and Winter Streets, Boston, MA. Below the elevator, at the Red Line level, the existing elevator machine room and equipment were replaced with new construction including mechanical, electrical, communications and plumbing work to support the design. As the Project’s elevator shaft is situated within the oldest underground transit station in North America and its close proximity to abutting, century-plus old office buildings, strict attention to geotechnical, structural and water table monitoring was paramount, to avoid damage or settlement to the station and surrounding structures. Also, the elevator’s footprint is situated at the curb line of one of Boston’s busiest urban thoroughfares, Tremont Street.
