Estimated Project Value: $250M
For this Joint Venture Highway and Roads project, Barletta Heavy Division partnered with O&G Industries, Inc. The I-91 Charter Oak Bridge Project includes two projects designed to reduce congestion and improve safety in Hartford, East Hartford, and Wethersfield. Previously referred to as one of the worst bottlenecks in America, this project included widening of the first five spans of the Charter Oak Bridge and reconstruction of Exit 29. By doubling the bridge capacity and improving the geometry of the connector, these major improvements eliminated an interchange infamous for mile-long backups. The first portion of the Project addressed safety concerns and operational failures. Roadways were lowered under bridges, I-91 North bound was widened, and Exit 29 was reconstructed by 5 spans (880 feet long). For the second portion of the Project, improvements were made to extend the life of the pavement and bridges (milling/paving & subsurface concrete repairs) between the Elm St. Overpass in Wethersfield and the new Exit 29 off-ramp in Hartford.
