Commonwealth Pier Rehabilitation Project
Location: South Boston, Massachusetts
Contract Value: $6,436,979
Project Dates: September 2006 - June 2008
This project provided for the rehabilitation of the underside of the existing pier deck at Commonwealth Pier, including repairs to the concrete and steel supporting structure, jacketing of the existing supporting caissons and sandblasting and coating of all exposed structural steel.
Work included the removal of 150,000 square feet of lead-based paint on an active Pier in Boston Harbor. Specialty sub-trades, including divers and abatement firms were employed, along with an elaborate shielding system to protect both the harbor and the surface of the pier.
Crews were staged on both land and water, and work was required to be performed so as to avoid interfering with the normal use and operations of activities on and around Commonwealth Pier.
